How to Conceal a Crusty “Cold” Nose

A recent sinus infection has inspired this article. My dad always said that the world is built by people who go to work everyday whether they feel like it or not. I absorbed my father’s wisdom growing up, and this loosely translates to me going to work with sinusitis and a red, crusty nose, thus the need to conceal it. Read on!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Quality tissues
  • Lipbalm
  • Makeup or concealer
  1. Step 1

First thing, go buy some real tissues, preferably the Puff’s Plus with lotion. Stop using toilet paper, napkins, and the cheap generic tissue your employer provides. I promise your nose will thank you. Also, don’t continue to wipe with a damp used tissue. As soon as you stop wiping with sandpaper, or soggy sandpaper, redness of the snoz and surrounding area should improve within a couple of hours.

  2. Step 2

Remove dry, flaky skin by exfoliating gently with a steaming hot, wet washcloth. Hold the cloth against the problem area for a minute to soften dead skin. Then very softly wipe away the big flakes. Like with a peeling sunburn, you can’t remove all the skin at one time and will only make things worse if you try. Also, avoid exfoliating scrubs, retinoid products, and AHA/DHA products that might make peeling worse.

  3. Step 3

While you’re out buying a soft tissue, pick up a couple of tubes of ChapStick, one for your nose and a different flavored one for your chapped lips because you sure don’t want to mix them up. Apply the ChapStick to all red and crusty areas of your nose including the nostrils, and apply it often. The balm protects your nose from the wetness and wiping. It also smoothes the rough, flaky skin and gives you a sticky base for foundation or concealer to stick to.

  4. Step 4

When it comes to makeup, less is more when dealing with a crusty nose. Most concealers are thick, drier than liquid foundations, and only emphasize flaking. A thin coat of liquid moisturizing makeup dabbed on with a finger looks most natural. Be sure to tone down the rest of your makeup; a red, flaky nose looks silly with heavy eye makeup and bright red lips.

Tips & Warnings
  • Green-based concealers offset redness.
  • If desperate, try applying a diaper rash cream to your nose before bed. Desitin works best, but has an awful smell, however if your nose is bad enough to use a diaper rash cream, you won’t be able to smell it anyway.
  • A hot compress over the sinus area will alleviate some sinus pain as well as soften dead skin on your nose.
