Things You'll Need:
- Internet
- Time
-
Step 1
Shop the bargain stores. Check out TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Filene's Basement, Ross and your local discount clothing stores. These stores have lots of name brands and no-name brands for deep discounts. Why pay full price at a sporting goods store when you can pay less than half the amount for the same thing at a discount retailer? In general, it's best to stay away from malls and sporting goods stores as they charge full price, if not more, for most items. (Once in a while you can score some cheap shoes or workout clothes on clearance at these stores but usually even their sales aren't great).
-
Step 2
Visit outlet stores and malls. There are many brand name outlet stores - Puma, for instance - and you can get a good deal on items that would cost a lot more at their regular stores. Do a Google search of your favorite brands to find if they have outlet stores near you.
-
Step 3
Check in the children's or teen's clothing sections. If you're small to medium-sized (man or woman), you can find workout shirts and jackets in the boy's section of the store or the teen section. They often have nice styles that are similar or the same as the adult styles for a fraction of the price. For example, I found a really nice long-sleeved running shirt in the boys section of a department store at about half of what similar shirts in the women's section were.
-
Step 4
Shop online. You can get big discounts on workout clothes on eBay. Just make sure you check out the shipping rate before you buy. If a seller has a lot of items to choose from, consider buying a few things from to save on shipping costs. You can also check Craigslist for your area and look under the clothing and the sporting goods section. In addition, try signing up at Freecycle.org to be notified of people giving away free stuff in your area. When athletic clothes come up, contact the person giving them away and go get 'em, you can't beat free!
-
Step 5
Be thrifty. Thrift stores are a great way to recycle clothing, save money and often times, support a charity. You can get unique, retro looking sports clothes for just a few dollars at a thrift store. Check out the Salvation Army, Goodwill and other local stores. Also hunt through garage sales in your area and you'll be surprised at how much you can get for almost nothing. (Go for the big yard or garage sales or the ones that advertise clothing so you don't waste time and money driving to a bunch of them.)
-
Step 6
For deep discounts on sporting equipment, check out Play It Again Sports, where you can buy used equipment and gear for less. You can also trade in your old equipment and get cash or credit for new equipment.
