Things You'll Need:
- Time and persistence.
-
Step 1
Decide what kinds of cakes you would like to make. I grew up in a home where my mother had her own cake decorating business. She found that wedding cakes make the most money. However, she did all sorts of cakes.
-
Step 2
Take a class on how to decorate cakes. JoAnn Fabrics offeres Wilton cake classes. There are several classes to choose from. It's with beginner to advanced.
-
Step 3
Slowly build your inventory. You are going to need baking pans, bags, decorating tips, a turntable or lazy susan.
-
Step 4
Make sample cakes for your friends and family. Let them know that you are starting a new business. You will be surprised at how much business you will gain from word of mouth.
-
Step 5
Order business cards or print your own. Make sure to leave a few business cards with your customers. You could even offer a discount on the business card.

on 1/14/2009 This sounds neat. I've always thought about opening a bakery somewhere in the area we live in. Good article. :) 5*s

on 1/2/2009 Please understand that it is illegal to operate a food service business from your home in most states. You must have a permit from the Health Department, and you can not use your personal kitchen.
