Follow these steps to success when picking a dress for your next party.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Money
  • A party to go to!
  1. Step 1

What’s the event? Is it a dinner party with close friends or a larger, more formal party? Keep this in mind when you decide how fancy you want to go. Also make sure it is appropriate for the people you will be with. Singles? Feel free to look sexier than you would if it was couples only.

  2. Step 2

Length. Are you short, tall, or in the middle? If you are short, pick a dress that hits above the knee. If you’re tall, feel free to go with a floor-length dress/longer dress.

  3. Step 3

Neckline. Boat-neck, v-neck, sleeveless, strapless? There are many options to choose from here. Choose based on how much skin you want to show, what hairstyle you are doing, and how flattering they are to your face. If you are doing an updo, you can choose a more covered-up neckline, but with a strapless dress an updo shows too much skin.

  4. Step 4

Match! Make sure you have the shoes to go with it. Nothing is worse than buying a dress last-minute and finding your only good pair of shoes clash horribly with it.

  5. Step 5

Color. Reds, browns, and gold can look stunning on brunettes but too flashy on blonds, or not flashy enough in the case of brown. If you are a daring blond, go for them, but beware, they will show up in contrast to your skin and hair. Black, grey, and white look good on everyone, though winter white is the only white acceptable past labor day. Stay far away from floral patterns. Blonds, go for greens, blues, and purples which won’t be as shocking at reds and golds.

  6. Step 6

Make sure you and your date ( if you have one) don’t clash. Keep his outfit in mind when you are purchasing your dress.

  7. Step 7

This isn’t prom. Nothing too shiny, stretchy, or satiny, unless you want that look of course!

  8. Step 8

Don't go over budget! Try to pick something that won't go out of style so you can wear it again.
For a bigger budget: Neiman Marcus, Lord and Taylor, Bloomingdales, Ralph Lauren
For a medium budget: Jessica McClintock, Macy's,
For a smaller budget: Forever 21, JCPenney, Banana Republic, Gap
