Things You'll Need:
- Parade Schedule and Map
-
Step 1
Chinese New Year is of course celebrated later than our usual New Year. Find out what day it is going to be and the location of the parade. It is not the same day every year. You can find out by looking in Chinatown, the newspaper or event schedules.
-
Step 2
Try to find out what year it is in the Chinese zodiac. 2009 is the Year of the Ox. The year belongs to one of the animals in the zodiac. It is nice to know what animal you are in Chinese astrology also in case someone asks you.
-
Step 3
Once you know where and when it is you just need to plan to go. The locations can be different. You can really just stand depending on where you are going. It gives you a good view. I noticed some people were getting seats. It is a nice idea to wear something that is good looking or fitting in with the spirit of the parade. It is a lot of fun to watch.
-
Step 4
The end of the parade is the most important part to the Chinese. The dragon is coming. You are supposed to be very polite as the dragon is coming since it is a big event. You are supposed to wait and be still and act with respect. They know that others don't understand that. There are firecrackers at the end of the parade in San Francisco. The fireworks are to get rid of evil spirits. The dragon they hope will bring them good luck. See the attached link on dragon magic.

Step 5
Topping it all off with dinner at a Chinese restaurant would be ideal.
