Secure storage for Passwords, PINs, and more!
Secure storage for Passwords, PINs, and more!

Now more than ever, we all have tons of information which we must maintain. And much of the personal information we must juggle is sensitive or confidential. Keeping up with usernames and passwords alone can be a daunting task. You certainly don’t want to use the same username and password for every site and system, but remembering dozens of passwords is impractical for anyone. What’s needed is a secure place to store things like passwords, credit card numbers, PIN codes, and other confidential data. And beyond secure storage, we need easy access so that we can put our fingers on the information we need, when we need it, where we need it, and with minimal effort. By using SplashID, one of the popular products that is part of the suite of applications by SplashData, we have all of this and more. I’ve used the application on the desktop, on Palm PDAs, and on Blackberry PDAs, and anymore I have no idea how I would manage without it. Regardless of whether you just want secure storage on your PC, or would like to sync to your handheld, SplashID is an awesome product. SplashID supports Palm, Pocket PC, SmartPhone, iPhone, Series 60, and BlackBerry, so regardless of how you manage your portable information, you’re likely covered. Cost for the application is about $30. If you need a secure way to store your private data, it’s an investment you will not regret. In this article, I’ll provide the simple steps to get you started.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • PC
  • SplashID software ($30, Free Trial available)
  • Palm, Blackberry, iPhone, or other PDA (optional)
  1. Step 1

Visit the SplashID website (http://www.splashdata.com/splashid/) , then click the tab representing the platform you plan to use (Palm, BlackBerry, etc.). If you plan to use just the desktop, then the desktop-only option may be downloaded here: http://www.splashdata.com/splashid/desktop/. The sidebar on the right of the web site offers a link for both Windows and Mac OS users.

  2. Step 2

Browse the features for the platform you’ve selected, then find links near the bottom of the page to either download a trial or to purchase SplashID.

  3. Step 3
    Desktop for data-entry

Once you’ve downloaded and installed the application, you’re ready to begin storing your confidential data. If you have lots of data to input, you’ll probably find it easier to input data on the Desktop application, then sync to your handheld PDA.

  4. Step 4
    Custom Categories
    Custom Categories

Begin by looking over the various categories. You’ll find it useful to apply these categories to your information. You may customize the default categories used by SplashID. Create your own new categories if needed. And for any of the existing categories, you may customize the fields that are defined. You may edit categories and fields from either the Desktop or the handheld application. For example, I’ve modified fields for my “Vehicles” type to include things like “Key Code”, “Paint Color Code”, “Lic. Plate No.”, “VIN”, etc. And I’ve created a completely new category called “Network Logins”.

  5. Step 5
    Sync to your PDA
    Sync to your PDA

If you’re using the desktop application only (no sync to PDA), then you’re done! Otherwise, you may now synchronize with your Palm, BlackBerry, iPhone or other PDA. Note that in order to synchronize data, your SplashID password on your handheld must match the password used on the Desktop.

  6. Step 6

Moving forward, you may either input/modify information on the Desktop or on the PDA. Either way, changes will be synchronized. And best of all, your confidential data is now at your fingertips when and where you need.
