If you want to jump start your efforts for reaching a goal, try this one-week guide.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • motivation
  1. Step 1

First, select your goal. To do this, make a list of all of the goals that come to mind. Then eliminate each goal that just doesn't call out to you right now. There will be one goal that seems to almost jump off the page at you -- this is the goal you should select.

  2. Step 2

Now, write one paragraph about what your life will be like once you accomplish this goal. Include all the positive ways it will impact you.

  3. Step 3

Take your large goal and break it down into smaller steps. Each step should be very easy and take no more than 5-10 minutes. Create a long list of steps.

  4. Step 4

Now schedule your steps during a one-week period -- 5 work days. On your calendar, schedule one simple step on the first day and each following day, increase the amount of work slightly. Your calendar should look something like this: "Monday, call gym and ask how expensive it is. Tuesday, buy hand weights for home and go to gym to sign-up. Wednesday, buy work out outfit and use weights at home. Thursday, schedule a session with a trainer. Friday, work out."

  5. Step 5

Now, get someone you trust to hold you accountable! Ask a friend, family member or someone else you find motivating to check in with you and ask if you've completed the items on the list. Tell them to ask you about how the goal will impact your life, if you find yourself losing motivation.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure the steps you choose for your one-week period are achievable in one week. You don't want to fail.
  • Also make sure your steps are challenging enough that they will excite you to make big new changes in your life!
  • You can follow these same steps for week 2, week 3, and so on, until you reach the ultimate goal you wrote about in your paragraph in step 1.
  • Don't be surprised if your motivation comes and goes -- we are all human. Just do your best to stick with the plan.
  • If you don't achieve everything in week 1, make sure to move those tasks over to your second week.
