How to Do Oil Pulling for Dental Health

Do you know that a natural remedy for improving your oral health is sitting in your kitchen cabinet? If you want whiter teeth, fresher breath and a means of fighting gum disease, make oil pulling part of your daily teeth-cleaning regimen.
Oil pulling is the practice of swishing edible oils like corn or canola in your mouth to draw impurities out of your system. Since toxins are found in bodily fluids, the idea is to pull them out through your saliva so your body can perform its natural functions better. The immediate site of the oil pull, your mouth, sees improvement by regularly cleansing it of the bacteria that causes tooth decay, gum disease and bad breath. However, the long-term effects are also beneficial, for people have reported improvements in everything from colds and acne breakouts to digestion and elimination due to flushing their bodies of impurities.

Instructions

    • 1

Take 2 tbsp. of oil upon arising in the morning and prior to putting anything else in your mouth. It doesn't matter what kind you use, only that it's a taste that you like. A few suggestions are olive, sunflower and flax seed. You can use generic cooking oil if you can stand the taste. You needn't buy an expensive brand, either.
Do not swallow the oil while you pull. The purpose is to get rid of impurities, so if you swallow any, you put the toxins back into your body. You'll have an urge to swallow, so let yourself dry swallow to relieve the sensation.

    • 2

Spit everything out after about 20 minutes. The oil will have changed from its gold color to one that is much whiter. Don't dispose of the oil in the sink drain or the toilet, because as the oil accumulates, it could clog the pipes.
Brush, floss and rinse your teeth as you usually would.

    • 3

Repeat Steps 1 and 2 in the evening.

Tips & Warnings

  • Oil pulling can relieve some ailments, but it's not a cure-all. If you experience moderate or severe discomfort related to any ailment, see your doctor or dentist at once.
