A Delica knife can be an excellent tool to have with you while hunting. As with any kitchen knife, though, these knives will begin to get dull after a good amount of use. Using a dull knife can be very frustrating and dangerous since you're putting more pressure on the knife to cut with it. Sharpening a Delica knife is a very simple process and keep your knife cutting like new for years to come.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Begin by purchasing a standard sharpening stone. The right sharpening stone will have one side that is sharp and one side that is rough.

  2. Step 2

Pour about one teaspoon of honing oil onto the center of the rough side of the sharpening stone. Use your index and middle finger to spread the oil evenly on the stone.

  3. Step 3

Grip the Delica knife as you normally would and tilt it to a 30-degree angle toward the sharpening stone. Rest your other hand on the back side of the blade. This is the hand you will use to guide the blade along the stone.

  4. Step 4

Run the blade of the knife along the rough side of the sharpening stone away from your body. When doing this, start at one corner of the stone and run the knife along the stone in a semi-circle motion so that you will end at the opposite corner of the stone. You should have just a slight pressure on the stone. Let the stone, not your hand, do the sharpening.

  5. Step 5

Flip the knife over to the opposite side and sharpen the blade toward your body. Again, do so in a semi-circle so that you will start at one corner of the stone and finish at the opposite corner.

  6. Step 6

Go back and forth until you have sharpened each side of the blade five times. Test the sharpness of the blade to see if it is to your liking. If the blade is not sharp enough, perform another sharpening series of ten swipes (five on each side of the blade) and check again. Continue to do this until you're happy with the sharpness of the blade.

  7. Step 7

Turn the sharpening stone over to the smooth side and repeat the entire process. Run the blade of the Delica knife along the smooth side of the sharpening stone the same amount of times that you did against the rough side.

Tips & Warnings
  • Water can be substituted for honing oil.
