How to Replace RV Furniture

Whether furniture fabrics are faded from the sun, seat cushions have seen better days or you simply want to update with a new look, it may be time to add RV furniture to your shopping list. Keep in mind that buying functional pieces doesn't mean that you have to sacrifice comfort and style. Even when furnishings become worn or damaged, the cost to replace standard RV furnishings can be rather expensive. However, you can find other practical alternatives and work within a budget at the same time.

Visit an upholstery shop for an estimate on reupholstering the RV furniture you already have. Keep in mind, though, that reupholstering a sofa may cost more than replacing it with new. If you are a talented do-it-yourselfer, think about reupholstering the sofa yourself. You can buy fabric by the square yard.

Decide how much you want to spend for new furnishings. Consider the kind of furniture you will need, keeping both cost and space limitations in mind. Sofa bed sleepers are usually a wise investment, as they serve a dual purpose and save valuable space.

Browse the Internet for RV products (see Resources below). You do not necessarily have to order through your RV dealer if you find furnishings that you like somewhere else at a better price. Some larger online companies offer products at lower cost than a local dealer might charge as the middleman.

Consider replacing RV furnishings with regular furniture. You can attach metal L-brackets to the rear feet of a sofa to keep it from moving. If you do decide not to replace with regular RV furnishings, don't forget to take into account that any furniture pieces need to be small enough to pass through the doorway of an RV. For example, you can replace the original RV sofa and recliners with a La-Z-Boy sofa and recliners. These furnishings have backs that slide off making it easier to get them into the RV.

Replace the dinette furniture in an RV with a small free-standing dining table and chairs, but be sure to take careful measurements before buying any replacement furnishings. You may want to bolt down any new furnishings that you do not want moving around.

Tips & Warnings

  • Because RV furnishings are made specifically for RVs, items can cost more than household furniture.
