How to Make a Pom Pom Scarf

This scarf made of homemade pom poms is an easy, customizable project that's great for kids. Simply create the pom poms from a cozy yarn and string them onto strong nylon thread. The fluffy pom poms create a warm, practical garment that's fun to make and wear.

Things You'll Need

• Cardboard
• Compass
• Scissors
• Quarter
• Yarn
• Manicure scissors
• Clear nylon thread
• Needle

Instructions

1. Lay the cardboard flat on a table. Use the compass to draw the outline of two circles that are 10 centimeters in diameter. Cut out the circles. Put a quarter in the center of one of the circles and trace around it. Stack the two circles, with the quarter-traced one on top, and cut out the center circle.

2. Stack the two circles, lining up the center hole. Wrap yarn around the circles, going through the hole each time to create a yarn-covered doughnut shape. When the cardboard is totally covered, use a pair of manicure scissors to snip the yarn around the outside edge of the doughnut. Do not remove the yarn from the doughnut.

3. Cut a 6-inch piece of yarn and slide it between the two cardboard circles. Knot it around the center of the pom pom and slide the pom pom out from the center of the cardboard doughnut. Fluff the pom pom and clip off the tails of the knot so that they are the same length as the rest of the puff.

4. Repeat this process until there are enough pom poms to make a scarf. Depending on the length, anywhere between 10 and 20 pom poms will probably be required. Line up the pom poms on a table.

5. Measure the row of pom poms with the clear nylon thread, cutting off enough for the scarf plus an 6-inch tail. Thread the needle and knot the end of the string. Feed the pom poms onto the thread, being careful to go right through the center of each pom pom. Tie off the string when finished.
