How to Use Natural Remedies to Treat Poison Ivy
Redness, itching, blisters, oozing and crusting are all uncomfortable and sometimes painful symptoms of poison ivy. Anti-inflammatory, astringent and antibacterial herbs work best to treat the problem. When used properly, they can provide relief and speed the healing of poison ivy rashes. Poison oak and sumac can be treated similarly.

1
Pick a few fresh plantain leaves. Wash them, mash and apply as a poultice to the affected areas. Plantain leaves are antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and they speed healing.
-
2
Slice open an aloe vera leaf. Extract the gel and apply directly to the rash. Aloe vera is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and it hastens the healing process.
-
-
3
Apply witch hazel extract as needed to the affected areas. Soak a clean cloth in the liquid and drape it over the skin. Witch hazel is cooling and drying and will soothe itchiness.
-
4
Puree cucumber in a blender and apply the mash directly to the skin. Cover with a clean, cotton cloth. Repeat as often as needed. Cucumber will cool and soothe the itching accompanied by poison ivy.
-
5
Moisten a regular tea bag and apply to the rash. Tea contains tannic acid that contracts inflamed tissue and relieves itching.
-
6
Put oatmeal in a clean cheesecloth or sock. Tie them up and use the cloth or sock as a washcloth in a warm bath. Add 3 to 5 drops peppermint essential oil to the bath. The oats will stop itching and the peppermint oil will cool the rash.

Tips & Warnings
If you are prone to poison ivy outbreaks, let plantain grow in your yard. It is a common weed in most of North America. You can use a commercial aloe vera gel instead of the fresh leaves. Check the label to make sure the product contains pure aloe vera gel. Cucumber slices can be applied directly to the skin instead of puree. Green, black or orange tea bags can be used for the tea treatment.
If the smoke from burning poison ivy has been inhaled or if the oil has gotten into the eyes, seek professional medical help immediately. Severe discomfort, itching, burning or infections are also indicators that a doctor should be consulted. Avoid applying heavy creams or ointments that trap moisture to the rash. This will prolong the rash and do little to speed healing. Do not use more than 3 to 5 drops of peppermint essential oil in the bath. The oil is very concentrated and can irritate skin if used in larger quantities.
