How to Treat Colds With an Herbal Steam Bath
Steam is an old-fashioned treatment for colds, congestion and coughs. The effectiveness of the steam remedy is increased by adding herbs or essential oils to the water. When the steam is inhaled, the decongestant and antiseptic herbal ingredients go just where they're needed, into irritated and congested sinus passages, throat and lungs.

Tips & Warnings
Essential oils may be substituted for the dried herbs, if desired. Use 3 to 5 drops total of any of the corresponding essential oils. Do not use 3 to 5 drops for each herb. If you use essential oils for the steam, discard the water after inhaling the steam. Then, run a hot bath and add 5 to 10 drops of essential oil to the water.
Take a test breath of the steam before completely covering the bowl with the towel. Make sure the temperature is comfortable and the herbs or essential oils don't cause any irritation. Do not administer an essential oil steam to small children unless you allow them to sniff the oil first. Some children are sensitive to the strong smell. If they don't react negatively, use 1 to 3 drops of essential oil to 4 cups of water. Children can most always tolerate the herbal steam without irritation.
