Not only is this recycled craft a great way to help the environment by reducing waste, but the level of complexity is completely adaptable based on the child's age. Help them to create a beautiful piece of art, place mats or even colorful handmade note cards.

Things You'll Need:

  • Black paper or blank dark note cards
  • Old magazines, catalogs or junk mail
  • Child safety scissors
  • Non-toxic glue sticks
  • Hole punches or paper punches (optional)

    Making Paper Mosaics!

  1. Step 1

Decide what you want your mosaic to look like. If you're making a free-form design, simply cut out or paper punch out several different shapes and see where your creativity takes you. If you have a specific idea for a design cut out shapes to suit your idea. For example, in the flower paper mosaic above a stem, leaves and flower parts were cut from paper with different colors, designs and textures. Try to mix solid colors with colorful prints for a diverse effect.

  2. Step 2

Begin gluing the tiles to the black paper or note cards with a glue stick.

  3. Step 3

Leave some space between tiles so that the black paper remains visible. This will create the mosaic effect. The design can be as simple or as intricate as you'd like. Just add a small design or fill the whole piece of paper.

  4. Step 4

Set your paper mosaic project aside to dry overnight and enjoy the finished results.
