Opening a business in Ohio is much like opening a business in any state. With a computer and Internet access, most individuals can accomplish this in one day. This article will inform the new business owner the steps to getting up and running in Ohio.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Internet access
  1. Step 1

Access the Ohio Business Gateway website. Click on the link "1st Stop Business Connection" on the menu to the left of the page. This opens a questionnaire that will assist you in determining what licenses, potential fees and permits will be needed for opening your Ohio business. After completing the form you will have the option to download startup guides for the type of business you wish to open.

  2. Step 2

Register the name of your business with the Secretary of State's government website. Under "Business Filings" you can determine if the name of your business is available. A fee is charged for registering your business. This is based on the type of business structure (i.e. sole-proprietor, partnership, LLC) your business will use.

  3. Step 3

Apply for an Employee Identification Number (EIN) through the IRS website or mail the form (form SS-4) included in the download from Step 1. After applying online you will receive your EIN. The EIN may be required before you can complete Step 2. After determining the availability of the name of your business, you may want to complete the EIN application.

  4. Step 4

If you will have employees you will need to establish Workers Compensation Coverage with the Ohio Bureau of Workers Compensation. You can download and print the form necessary for this or you can apply online.

  5. Step 5

Register with the Ohio Department of Taxation for filing sales tax or employee taxes. This can be done by telephone at (888) 405-4089 or online.

  6. Step 6

Apply for an Unemployment Compensation Tax Account with the Ohio Department of Job & Family Services if you will have employees. Contact the Bureau of UC Tax at (614) 466-2319 to obtain and complete the form "Report to Determine Liability" and mail it to:
Ohio Department of Job and Family Services
    Contribution Section
    PO Box 182404
    Columbus Ohio 43218-2404.

  7. Step 7

Check with local city and county offices for any further licenses, permits and filings for opening a business after completing the state requirements.

Tips & Warnings
  • In case an individual doesn't have access to a computer or internet, this process can be completed by contacting the Ohio Department of Development at 1-800-248-4040 or 614-466-4232. The business kit will then be sent by U.S. mail.
