Building a wooden awning takes about five hours of your time if you're making it for your windows. A wood awning can also be used to cover patios; this will take longer. The wooden awning gives a home a nice appearance, but does not last as long as other types of awnings, such as aluminum.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Galvanized screws
  • Drill
  • Two brackets
  • Four-inch wide wood
  • UV5 Clear Wood Finish
  • Level
  1. Step 1

Measure the width of the window. Add one inch for each side of the window. Buy wooden slats that matche the length of the wood needed or cut them yourself to the determined measurement. These slats will be screwed together vertically so be sure to get enough. These pieces of wood need to be four inches wide and one inch thick.

  2. Step 2

Put a finish on all of the wood. Use UV5 Clear Wood Finish, which will protect the wood from rain and sun. This can be bought in any hardware store.

  3. Step 3

Use a level to connect the brackets. Keep the brackets about one inch above the window frame and a half inch out from the sides. Make the brace for the awning. This will be two pieces of wood, the length of which depends on how far out from the window you want the awning to sit. The width of the piece of wood will be no bigger than one inch. Be sure to put a finish on the two braces as well.

  4. Step 4

Screw each slat together vertically. Use galvanized screws so they will not rust. Measure the length of the awning. Screw the brace to the window frame, about a half-inch up from the end of the awning.

  5. Step 5

Cut one piece of wood the width of the awning. This will go on top of the slats horizontally to attach to brackets. Screw the piece of wood into the slats using a drill. Make sure that it is level.

  6. Step 6

Attach the awning to the brackets and brace. Drill the left side into the brace and attach it to the bracket. Do the same on the right and check to see if it is level.
