How to Make a Fleece Hooded Scarf
This snug, hooded scarf is made of fleece, a material that doesn't ravel when cut and is relatively simple to work with. This winter garment goes over the head and around the neck, and is especially great for small children who struggle to keep their bulky scarves and hats in place. This pattern is sized for a child, but could easily be updated to fit an adult.

1
Lay the fleece out flat on a table, with the wrong side up. The wrong side, which is usually the side that has not been treated with a sheen that prevents pilling, is fuzzier and lighter than the right side. An associate at the fabric store should be able to mark which is the wrong side if you're unsure.

2
Measure a rectangle of fleece that is 62 inches long by 10 inches wide. Cut out the rectangle and fold it in half width-wise, making a rectangle that is 31 inches long by 10 inches wide. Make sure the wrong side of the fabric is facing out.

3
Lay the folded cloth out so the the folded edge is on top. Measure six inches along the folded edge, from the top right corner. Mark the six-inch spot. Measure eight inches from the top right corner down the side of the material, and mark the spot.
-
4
Using the marks as a guide, cut the material in a curve from the top mark to the side mark. This curved edge will make the back of the hood.
-
5
Use a needle and thread to sew the curved edges together. Zig-zag the seam allowance after joining the edges.
-
6
Turn the scarf right-side out. Cut 10 to 20 thin strips of the fleece and attach them to the point of the hood with a needle and thread to make a pom-pom on top. Trim the strips so that they are uniform length.
-
7
Place the hooded scarf on the recipient and mark the spot where the material hits just below the chin. Remove the hooded scarf and sew a small button on the marked spot. On the material opposite the button, sew a thin elastic loop for the button to feed through. This will keep the hood on the child's head.
-
8
Make two-inch cuts across the bottom of the scarf's tails for fringe.
