How to Make Broadhead Arrows

Broadhead arrows are mostly used for hunting. They fly up to 40 yards and are known for their quick kill. There are two main types of tips, fixed blade and mechanical. The fixed blades are rigid and unmovable, while the mechanical tip deploys its blades upon contact with its target. The broadhead arrow uses only real feathers in order to achieve speed and direction.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase stiff pine wood. Measure the length of your arm. Cut the wood one and half times the length of your arm. The diameter should be no smaller than 3/4-inch. Be sure that it weighs the same as the bow in order for the arrow to fly correctly and the distance.

    • 2

Purchase broadhead piles. A pile is what the point of the arrow is called. These can be purchased in an archery store or hunting store. There are several kinds to choose from under broadhead. One of the better choices is the Thunderhead Pro Series which will sell a pack of 6 piles.

    • 3

Use the tapering tool to fit the pile on the shaft. Scour the pile with a degreaser, and then glue the pile onto the shaft using an epoxy based glue. Make sure it is perfectly straight. Then wait for it to dry.

    • 4

Measure the draw back. Take the shaft with its pile glued on and draw back on the bow. The broadhead pile will stick out about an inch. Determine how much of the back of the shaft you will need to cut off. The back of the shaft will meet at the distance the bow is pulled back. This will be where the nock is put into the shaft. The nock is where the string of the bow sits in the shaft for easy take off. This is made with a tapering tool. The remaining part of the shaft will need to be cut off with the tapering tool as well.

    • 5

Use a fletching tool or tapering tool to make three 1/2-inch marks. These marks will be for the fletchings which are the feathers. For a broadhead arrow you will need real feathers. They will need to be at 120 degree angles. Glue the feathers into the cuts made for the feather. The fletchings can be bought at an archery store. It is recommended that the fletchings are at least 4-inches long for a better flight.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add a small drop of glue at the tips of the feather in order to prevent cuts on fingers. Make sure the Broadhead arrow is perfectly straight.
