Attaching a snow plow to an ATV is useful since the vehicle is small and can get in areas that a large snow plow machine cannot get into. Though an ATV is mostly used during warm weather for fun, it can have a practical application during the winter months with the addition of a snow plow.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Metal saw
  • Oil barrel
  • Welder
  • Rust proof primer
  • 12-gauge steel sheeting
  • Steel braces
  • Iron blade
  • Blowtorch
  1. Step 1

Purchase 3 sheets of steel. Get one section of 12-gauge steel 6 inches thick. This can be bought at any hardware store or online (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

Draw the shape of the plow on the steel, then cut it with a saw. Be sure to consider the curve of the plow, otherwise it will come out smaller than you wanted.

  3. Step 3

Place the steel around an oil barrel. This will create the round shape that is needed. Use a blowtorch in order to apply enough heat to achieve and hold the shape of the snow plow. Do this for 15 minutes.

  4. Step 4

Remove the steel from the barrel once it is cooled. Then trace the snow plow onto another sheet of steel. Cut the shape out with a saw. This will be welded onto the back of the snow plow.

  5. Step 5

Weld on attachments to the back of the snow plow. This will be for lifting the snow plow from your ATV. In order to do so you will need to determine how big the snow plow is and about where you will want the plow placed in front of the ATV. Use two steel braces and weld it onto the front of the ATV and under the snow plow.

  6. Step 6

Coat the snow plow with rust-proof primer. Apply three coats and wait 15 minutes before each application.

  7. Step 7

Prepare the blade for the snow plow. Use the iron sheet and cut a section as long as the plow is and about 4 inches wide. Sharpen one edge Lay it onto the end of the snowplow. Drill holes 5 inches apart and insert rivets into the iron sheet to the snow plow.

Tips & Warnings
  • The snow plow doesn't only lift snow and will come across other particles such as rocks and asphalt. Be sure that the snow plow heavy enough to pick these items up but not too heavy that it will tip the atv over.
