Step 1
Determine your photo needs. If you're photographing a person or object with a strong light behind them, the camera often adjusts for the light source and leaves your subject "in the dark." This is especially true when photographing people--if there isn't sufficient light in the front, the features of the face will be dark and obscured. This is when you want to use a fill flash.

Step 2
Locate the Mode Dial on your camera. This is a round wheel on the top of the camera with several icons printed on it. The mode wheel controls many of the major functions of the camera, like playback, control of preset operations and so on. Look on the Mode Dial and find a small icon that looks like a camera, then rotate the Mode Dial to select this setting.

Step 3
Toggle through the different flash settings. On the back of the camera, you'll see a collection of four buttons located on the cardinal positions, i.e., north, south, east and west. The "east" button, the one on the right, will control your flash settings now that you have rotated the Mode Dial. Toggle this button several times and you'll see the different flash options show up on the camera's LCD screen. You'll see Red eye, Off, Auto and On. Select "On" and the flash will be activated every time you take a picture.
