How to Configure BlackBerry for Use With a PC

One of the best aspects of a BlackBerry wireless device is its ability to synch with your PC, allowing you 24/7 access to your emails and files. Configuring your BlackBerry and PC is the first step in creating this useful connection. It takes two basic steps to begin configuring your BlackBerry for use with your PC. First, you need to install the BlackBerry Desktop Manager Software onto your PC. After the software is installed on your PC, you will be ready to configure your PC.

Close all programs that are running on your PC. Insert the BlackBerry Desktop Manager Software CD into the computer's hard drive.

    • 2

Click "Next" when the BlackBerry Desktop Manager wizard opens. Select the country where you live from the drop-down menu and click "Next." Choose "I Accept" on the User License window and click "Next."

    • 3

Type in your name and organization (if applicable) in the Customer Information window and click "Next." In the Destination Folder window, click "Next." Choose "Typical" in the Setup Type window and click "Next."

    • 4

Choose "BlackBerry Enterprise Server or BlackBerry Desktop Redirector" from the Email Intergration Options window. This option allows you to configure your BlackBerry with your PC. The other option, "BlackBerry Internet Email," is for configuring your online email accounts. Click "Next."

    • 5

Choose the email system that you are currently using on your PC. Most home users are running Microsoft Outlook. If you are configuring your BlackBerry to synch with your work PC and are unsure if your company is using Outlook, Lotus or Novell; contact your IT support to find out. After choosing the email system, click "Next."

    • 6

Select "Redirect email using the BlackBerry Enterprise Server" and click "Next."

    • 7

Choose to create a shortcut for the desktop manager on your desktop if you want this option. You can also choose to have the manager start automatically when your computer starts. After making your choices, click "Next."

    • 8

Click "Install" to begin installing the desktop manager onto your PC. After installation is complete, choose "Yes, I want to start the Desktop Manager Software." Click "Finish."

    Configuring BlackBerry Desktop Manager Software

    • 9

Connect the USB cable to your BlackBerry and to your PC. The Desktop Manger will open on your PC screen.

    • 10

Enter the username and password that you use to access your email account. The BlackBerry Desktop Manger will automatically log into your email account and you will see the word "Online" at the bottom of the screen.

    • 11

Choose a PIN number for your BlackBerry and enter the number in the box. Make sure to remember this number because you will need it from now on to access your PC through your BlackBerry. Click "OK." You will see the word "Connected" at the bottom of the screen as the BlackBerry connects to the PC.

    • 12

Wait while the BlackBerry verifies the various PC applications it will need to access. When the BlackBerry is finished with this process, you will be redirected back to the main Desktop Manger screen.

    • 13

Double-click "Redirector Settings." Under the General tab, look in the PIN box to make sure that the PIN you chose is there. If it isn't, enter it now. Below the Pin box double-check to make sure that "Redirect incoming messages to your handheld" has been selected so that your incoming emails will show up on your BlackBerry. You can also create an outgoing signature for your email on this page. When you are finished, click "OK." Your basic BlackBerry/PC configuration is now complete.

Tips & Warnings

  • BlackBerry Desktop Manager software comes in the package with a new BlackBerry or can be downloaded at BlackBerry's website (see Resources below). BlackBerry also offers a Web-based desktop manager that allows you to perform many of the same tasks that you would on your PC when you don't have access to your PC or laptop. All you need is your BlackBerry and an Internet connection.
