The real estate closing agent plays an important role in transactions between buyers and sellers. They operate as a third party responsible for completing all of the necessary paperwork and dealing with many of the financial issues associated with the transaction, including escrow. If this sounds like a field you'd be interested in pursuing, there are some steps you can take to move in that direction.

Gain some training that will help you prepare for the demands of working as a closing agent. Although no specific formal training is required to work in this capacity, you do need to familiarize yourself with the ins and outs of the real estate industry before you start searching for a position. Classes are sometimes made available in local areas that will suffice. You can also contact closers in your area, express interest in their profession and ask how they learned the ropes of the industry. If you have worked previously as a real estate agent or broker, you may have an advantage because you will have gone through the closing process a great deal.

Start at the bottom. Even if you do get some formal training in the area, don't expect to be hired in as a full-fledged closing agent. Most people work as assistants to current agents first. The advantage is that you'll learn a lot about your job by assisting others but you won't have to worry about making mistakes that might cause problems for clients and their transactions. Most assistants have to wait up to three years for advancement.

Move up the ladder faster with additional formal training. If you want to expedite your move from assistant to full closing agent, consider heading back to college. Many of the companies hiring closing agents want professionals who have either a background in business or in real estate. While you're completing your formal training in these areas, you could also be working part-time as an assistant to a closing agent. That way you're getting the experience you need with the education you want.

Develop strong people skills. Part of being an effective closing agent is working well with people. After all, a big part of your salary is going to be based on commissions so you need to be likable and professional enough to draw in potential clients so you can earn as much as possible. Find ways to boost your verbal communication skills and your confidence when interacting with others. These skills will benefit you when you're trying to secure your position and when you're attempting to bring in new business.
