How to Write a CV Template

While templates for curriculum vitaes can be found at a variety of Websites online as well as through programs such as MS Word, it can be difficult to modify an existing template to fit our needs. Luckily, we also have the capability of building our own CV templates. Here is one way to write a CV Template using MS Word to create it.

Instructions

    • 1

Start by building the CV template that you wish to create. You can do this simply by choosing a new blank document in Word. Most CVs typically will have the applicant's name and contact information, the applicant's objective or goals, work history and education. It may also contain information regarding skills, achievements, professional organizations that the applicant belong to and hobbies.

    • 2

Format the CV the way you would like it to look, whether that's using bullet points for each job held, or using a bold font to highlight the applicant's position within a company. You can either include standing information for the template, which you can just delete and replace with your own information, or you can create a field to insert your information.

    • 3

Save file as a template. Once you have built the template, save the document as a template. Click "Save As." In the "Save as type" box change the type to "Document Template." Then create a title for your CV template and insert that under the "File Name" field. This will save the document in the "templates" folder. If you want to save the file somewhere else, simply change the location of the subfolder in the "Save As" window to a different location.

    • 4

Open the file and use the template. Now that you have the new CV template you can go ahead and create a CV based on that template. Simply navigate to the location where you placed your new template. If you left the template in the templates folder, click "new" under the "file" tab. Choose "general templates" and you will find your template there.

    • 5

Save as a new document. After building a CV using your template, don't forget to save the file correctly. If you simply click "save" you will overwrite your new template. Instead, you must click "Save As" and change the file type to a word document. Once you have done that, save it in the location of your choice.
