There are several aspects to this career that take years of training to learn. One thing every machinist must be able to do is read machinists' blueprints. There are numerous books one can use to learn about machinists blueprints, but these can cost between $50 to $100. For the same price, you can take an online course and learn even more.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Contact a local trade or technical school about taking an online course. As with larger colleges and universities, many schools offer specific courses that can be taken from the comfort of your own home. You must first find a school in your area that offers machinists' blueprint courses. The easiest way to do this is to contact a high school counselor or call local trade and technical schools directly. You can choose to take a single class or use this class as the launching point for a degree program.

  2. Step 2

Take the Blueprint Reading for Machinists online class on Universal Class. This online class is taught by John Clayton, an expert in machinists' blueprints who has been working in the business since the late 1970s. This course can be completed in under six months and is meant to be a straight and swift introduction to machinists blueprints. Five different lessons must be completed to finish the program. The course alone costs $35. There is an extra $25 cost for a certificate that states that you finished the program satisfactorily. Call (866) 661-6352 or email Universal Class at info@universalclass.com for more information.

  3. Step 3

Learn to read machinists' blueprints by taking online courses offered by ToolingU. This website specializes in training individuals who want to work in manufacturing. ToolingU offers two separate courses on machinists' blueprints. The first, Blueprint Reading 130, is an introduction to machinists' blueprints. This will teach you the fundamentals and basics. There are 18 lessons in this course. The second course, Interpreting Blueprints 230, will expand on the introductory course and get into the specifics of blueprints. The course includes an interactive lab. ToolingU even offers one free trial class, which lets you see if the courses on the website are right for you. Tips & Warnings
