Step 1
Purchase the exam voucher from SUN.com site. Open internet browser and type www.sun.com

Step 2
register in sun.com website and navigate to the path Home > Training > Certification > else use link in resources section.

Select what exam voucher version you want to take (right now 5.0 and 6.0 are available 6.0 is the latest) it is always recommended to go with latest version exam otherwise we have to take update exam in future which is optional though.

Step 4
Once purchased the exam from SUN site it will be valid up to 1 year of time, means exam can be written with in expiry time of the voucher.

Step 5
For booking the slot for taking the exam go to the following site http://www.register.prometric.com/Index.asp?tcl=1&cookie%5Ftest=1
And select which country, city you belongs so the site will guide you what are all the centers are available to write the exam. -
Step 6
Look for the best book to pass the exam, just go to Google and search for "best SCJP books" it will give the best book to follow. Most of the users recommends the below book
SCJP Sun Certified Programmer for Java 5 Study Guide and see the exam topics (found at sun site) are covered in the book. -
Step 7
Read the book at least 3 times completely then try to take the sample questions at the end of each chapter and check how many questions u made it clear.
While reading makes notes of important points and makes it is a reference for the final exam. -
Step 8
U can find many sample free or paid mock exams in the web and attempt to take as many exams u can

Step 9
How do u know when you are ready to take the exam is when u get constant score of above 80% in the mock exams you are ready to go for the real exam.

Step 10
Once u take the final exam if you pass the exam SUN will send the Certificate to your mentioned address.

on 2/21/2009 The SJCP is not that easy. Unless you have JAVA experience, you need to study a good book such as SCJP Sun Certified Programmer for Java by Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates. And you also should go through as much code as possible. The test is mainly about predicting compiling output and exceptions. Sometimes, the questions are very tricky.

on 1/12/2009 hmmmmm...just studying wont get you to pass the SCJP-test. I'm taking a 3 hour SCJP class every week for a year (half done now). My teacher said that by taking the class alone you wont pass. you need to study and work with Java for about 9 months in order to actually pass. it's supposed to be a freakin' hard test...
