How to Make a Scarf With a Knitting Board

How to Make a Scarf With a Knitting Boardthumbnail
Double-knit scarf

Making a scarf with a knitting board is a fairly quick and simple project, even for a non-knitter. A knitting board provides a stable base, making it easy for just about anyone to make a warm, double-sided scarf in just a few hours. Because you don't use needles, or need two hands to work with a knitting board, it is an ideal knitting method for children or for anyone who can't use two hands to knit. Here is how to make a simple stockinette stitch scarf.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Knitting board with at least 14 pegs 2.5 oz. worsted weight yarn Knitting hook Yarn needle
    1. Casting On Stitches for Your Scarf on the Knitting Board

      • 1

Make a slip knot about 4 inches from the end of the yarn.

      • 2

Place the loop over first peg on the top row of the knitting board.

      • 3

Bring the yarn down and around the second peg on the bottom row, then up around the second peg on the top row.

      • 4

Continue to zig-zag the yarn across the center opening of the knitting board until you have a single loop on 14 pegs in the bottom and the top row of the knitting board.

      • 5

Turn the board around so that the bottom row is at the top.

      • 6

Bring the yarn around each of the pegs in the same manner to create a second set of loops on each peg.

Lifting Off Stitches for Your Knitting Board Scarf

      • 1

Slide the knitting hook into the bottom loop on the first peg on the top row.

      • 2

Carefully lift the bottom loop over the second loop on the peg and slide it off the peg.

      • 3

Continue to lift loops off the pegs as you did the first one, alternating between the top and bottom rows until all of the pegs have only one loop on them. You have completed your first row of stitches for your scarf.

      • 4

Make the next row of stitches by looping the yarn back and forth around the pegs just as you did with the second row of stitches.

      • 5

Lift the stitches off as you did in the last row. Continue working in this manner, pulling the knitted fabric through the middle opening between the two rows as necessary. The knitted fabric will form a seamless tube that will become the body of your scarf.

Removing the Finished Scarf From the Knitting Board

      • 1

Continue working until the body of the scarf is the desired length. Cut the yarn, leaving a tail of about 18 inches.

      • 2

Thread a yarn needle with the cut end of the yarn.

      • 3

Working back and forth between the top and bottom rows of pegs, slide each remaining loop off the peg with the needle and pull the thread through the loop, sewing the top of the tube together. When all of the loops have been cast off in this manner, tie off the yarn and tuck the end inside the scarf body.

      • 4

Thread the needle with yarn again, and sew the bottom of the tube closed to complete the scarf.

      • 5

Add fringe or trim to both ends of the scarf if desired.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Knit a test swatch with the knitting board before beginning your scarf to check the gauge of your knitting. Use baby yarn or a lightweight cotton thread yarn for a lacy scarf or stole. Change colors by cutting the yarn and tying the end to the new color, tucking the knot inside as you work.
