There are lots of advantages to teaching on military bases and it's no harder than finding a job as a teacher in a public school. There are military bases in 13 states, in U.S. territories and all over the world. If this sounds like a fascinating career choice, read the following steps to get started.

From Quick Guide: Basics of Military Bases
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide what state you want to teach in, and then follow the certification procedures for that state. Military bases in the United States use the same criteria as the state in which it is located. You can find the certification requirements for all 50 states by going to a website maintained for that purpose by the University of Kentucky, linked below in the Resources section.

  2. Step 2

Check with the Department of Defense Educational Activity website, linked below. The organization will coordinate certification, based on the state that originally certifies you, and let you know if you need additional certification to teach overseas.

  3. Step 3

Apply for a job overseas. You can choose by state, territory or foreign country from a drop-down menu, linked below,

  4. Step 4

Find out what benefits may be available to you if you choose to teach at a foreign base. You may be able to have all your moving expenses paid.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are a military spouse, you are eligible for certain benefits if you decide to teach, whether or not it is on a military base. Find a "spouses to teachers" brochure, linked below.
