Make Christmas Ornament Cookies

Christmas Ornaments! The cherished family heirlooms that emerge every year to adorn the Christmas tree! These cookies allow for infinite possibilities for decoration. All you need is your imagination. Have fun making these cookies. They make a colorful addition to the Christmas dessert table.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sugar Cookie Dough
  • Icing
  • Christmas Ornament Cookie Cutter
  • Assorted food coloring
  • Skewer or toothpick
  • Pastry bags or ziploc bags
  1. Step 1

Using Sugar Cookie Dough of your choice, roll out and cut shapes with Christmas Ornament Cookie Cutter.

  2. Step 2

Place Christmas Ornament cut outs on baking sheet (I use a stoneware baking sheet, but any sheet will do). Bake according to recipe directions. Place on cooling rack. Cookies must be completely cool before icing.

  3. Step 3

Using icing of your choice, separate and make desired colors with food coloring. Place colors in pastry bags.

  4. Step 4

You can decorate the cookies however you want. For this variation, ice the cookie completely with white icing. Drop green and red icing in dots on the cookie. Using the pointed end of the skewer, pull through and around the dots. Decorate the rest of cookies.

  5. Step 5

Allow the cookies to set and enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure your dough remains cold while rolling. If it gets too warm, it will become sticky and hard to work with. Also, don't be afraid to use a liberal amount of flour when rolling.
  • You can find pastry bags at craft stores such as A.C. Moore, or the craft section of Walmart. You can also buy them online from Wilton or Ateco.
  • Have fun with the decorating! Experiment with different colors and designs.
  • If you can't find a Christmas Ornament cookie cutter in a store, look online. There are many online sites that sell copper cookie cutters in all shapes.
  • If you don't have a sugar cookie and icing recipe that you like, use mine "How To Make Delicious Sugar Cookies".
  • Do not attempt to stack or package these cookies until the frosting is fully set (at least 24 hours). Even then, the frosting will remain soft.
  • Your icing must flow enough so that you can use the skewer without leaving marks.
