This Photoshop tutorial shows you the simple steps to turn a photograph into a split-toned image Photoshop.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer running Photoshop. Photoshop CS2 was used for this tutorial
  1. Step 1
    Prepare to convert the image to black and white

    To begin this Photohop tutorial, launch Photoshop and open a photograph. Convert the image to a black and white picture. To do that, click on the Create Adjustment Layer Tool at the bottom of the Layers Palette. Click on Channel Mixer.

  2. Step 2

    In the Channel Mixer dialogue box, check the Monochrome box, then click OK.

    Select Color Balance from the Create Adjustment Layer Tool at the bottom of the Layers Palette.

    In the Color Balance dialogue box, make sure Midtones is selected, then set the settings to Red: 11, Yellow: -9

    Do not close the dialogue box yet.

    Continuing the previous step, in the Color Balance Dialogue box, click on Shadows and set the settings to Red: 11, Yellow: -9

    Click OK.

    In the Layers Palette, select the top Color Balance layer, then from the layers palette drop down menu, click on Blending Options.

  7. Step 7

    In the Blending Options dialogue box, in the Blend If section, press the Alt key on your keyboard while draggin the shadow triangles to the right. The triangles will separate. For my picture, I set This Layer to 74, 235 and 255, and Underlying Layer to 98, 230 and 255.
