A thank you note is one of the most appreciated personal correspondence. It tells the person being thanked a few things. First it tells him or her that time was taken by the person doing the thanking to write. Also the note tells the receiver that whatever task, gift or time was given by him or her is being acknowledged and respected. The note or letter is something that the receiver can touch and keep if he or she wants to.

A thank you note can be sent on a postcard or a blank note card or even a small piece of paper placed in an envelope. Notes are usually sent in appreciation of a lesser good deed like for Birthday money, attending a party and bringing a gift or volunteering for a few hours at and event or even helping someone out. The note should always be hand written. Handwriting is a personal form of communication unlike typing, using a printer or emailing.

Use an introduction like "Dear Mom" or "To my friend Ernie". Then, write a thank you line. "Thank you for helping my grandma and me rake up the yard today.", or "Thanks for the candle that you brought to our party.". Last, write a closing line, like, "I really had fun.", or "I hope to see you again, soon." The last line is the signature line. This is where you write the closing and sign your name. It goes maybe like this, "Best regards, Marge", or "Thanks again, Larry."

That's it for the simple thank you note. Just put it in an envelope with a stamp or put a stamp on the postcard and mail it or drop it off to him or her. It takes 2-5 minutes and it brings a little joy to the person who did something for you.

Thank you letters are a longer than notes and are usually written in appreciation of a more important or bigger gift or contribution. They are written in the same format that thank you notes are only with one or two additions.

Start with the introduction, and the thank you sentence and then expand the sentence into a paragraph about how the gift or contribution of time and or effort has enhanced your life or the lives of your family or group of people who have benefited from it. It can go like this, "The money that you gave to us helped us landscape the backyard. It looks great!", or "We were able to give out 25 food and children's clothing gift baskets with the children's clothing that you donated to us.".

If the person or people who gave the gift or contribution are close friends or family members, then you can add another paragraph telling about other good things that are happening in your life now, and or news about other family members or friends who know the receiver's of the letter. The last part of the letter is the closing and the signature, just like a thank you note.

While thank you notes not only benefit the receivers, they also benefit you personally in that the people who receive your notes or letters of thank you, will remember you. A really good teacher will appreciate a thank you note. You can use thank you notes after job interviews, or after a great customer service experience, such as a restaurant or department store. Being aware of and thanking a job well done or a good deed done by someone or a group of people can benefit you and him, her or them.
