Your car is acting up and you need a mechanic immediately. While you have a billion options to find a mechanic, the bigger question is how to not get ripped off in the process of getting your vehicle fixed. Here's how to find the perfect mechanic for you!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Ask around and see if friends, family or coworkers have any creditable mechanics that they can share the names with you. Sometimes this will be dealership garages and others it's Jim (or Jane) who lives down the street.

  2. Step 2

If you have a big job and it is a large sum of money, consider shopping around for the best mechanic for the job. Sometimes your regular mechanic just doesn't fit the bill and you need another opinion!

  3. Step 3

If you prefer dealerships garages and mechanics, check the Internet to see which dealerships has the best service. Usually those garages with bad services are written up negatively quickly!

  4. Step 4

If you get stuck on the road, don't be snickered into one particular garage or mechanic by the tow truck. not only are you paying them, but they get a kickback from the garage as well. Make sure you go to a mechanic you want.

  5. Step 5

When you are getting an estimate in person, ask the mechanic to show you the issues at hand. Get a feel to see if this individual likes their work or just has a job. If they are 'too busy' to show you, then consider the options of moving on as they can easily pack the invoice.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you get a mechanic and authorize a job, on the invoice they give you write 'I only agree to pay for this job and up to the amount of (insert amount). This will not obligate you for work you didn't authorize it.
  • Oil and lube companies do great changing the fluids, but think twice if you decide to make them your mechanics as they are specialized in only one area of training.
