Make Salt Dough Ornaments
Make Salt Dough Ornaments

Your kids will have a blast decorating these fun and easy ornaments. Great for Christmas ornaments...just use Christmas cookie cutters!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 1 1/2 cups hot water
  • rolling pin
  • cookie cutters
  • paint (tempera or acrylic)
  • clear varnish spray
  • food coloring (optional)
  • a toothpick
  1. Step 1

Preheat your oven to 300 degrees. In a large bowl, add flour, salt, and hot water. Mix very well with your hands until thoroughly combined. You may at this point divide small portions of dough to a separate bowl to color with the food coloring if desired.

  2. Step 2

Roll out dough onto flat surface. It doesn't really stick, so you shouldn't need any flour. Use cookie cutters to cut shapes out of the dough, and place them on a nonstick cookie sheet. Use the toothpick to create holes at the tops of the ornaments to put ribbon or wire hangers through.

  3. Step 3

Bake ornaments for about 25-30 minutes or until hard. Remove from oven and let cool.

  4. Step 4

Paint the ornaments anyway you like. We made some Christmas trees from our green dough and painted red and yellow dots on them...really easy. We also made candy canes from the plain dough and painted red stripes on them. Once the paint is dry, take the clear varnish and spray both sides of the ornaments. Lay to dry on paper towels. This will ensure that they last and is especially important to do if you live in a humid climate. Once dry, place the ribbons or wires through the holes and decorate your tree.

Tips & Warnings
  • Although they look like yummy cookies, be sure to warn your children that they taste gross and shouldn't be eaten.
