Make Winter Mitten Cookies
Make Winter Mitten Cookies

Winter! Snow, frosty days, and bundling up to stay warm outside. Kids making a snowman out in the yard. What says winter more than cozy mittens? These are easy and fun to make and delicious as well. A nice treat for a snowy day.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sugar Cookie Dough
  • Icing
  • Mitten Cookie Cutter
  • Blue food coloring
  • Pastry bags or ziploc bags
  • Skewer or toothpick
  1. Step 1

Using Sugar Cookie Dough of your choice, roll out and cut shapes with Mitten Cookie Cutter.

  2. Step 2

Place Mitten cut outs on baking sheet (I use a stoneware baking sheet, but any sheet will do). Bake according to recipe directions. Place on cooling rack. Cookies must be completely cool before icing.

  3. Step 3

Using icing of your choice, color about one quarter of it light blue. Place each color in a pastry bag (or a ziploc bag). Cut off the very tip of each bag (or corner of the ziploc bag).

  4. Step 4

Working on one cookie at a time, using the white icing, pipe the main part of the cookie as shown.

  5. Step 5

With the blue icing, fill in the empty spaces. Also pipe lines across the body of the mitten.

  6. Step 6

Now take the skewer (or toothpick) and move across the cookie, pulling through the icing alternately up and down (see picture). Clean the tip of the skewer and pull through the thumb of the mitten.

  7. Step 7

Repeat with remaining cookies. Allow to set, and enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure your dough remains cold while rolling. If it gets too warm, it will become sticky and hard to work with. Also, don't be afraid to use a liberal amount of flour when rolling.
  • You can find pastry bags at craft stores such as A.C. Moore, or the craft section of Walmart. You can also buy them online from Wilton or Ateco.
  • Have fun with the decorating! Experiment with different colors and designs. Or sprinkle with decorative sugar to represent ice crystals.
  • If you don't have a sugar cookie and icing recipe that you like, use mine "How To Make Delicious Sugar Cookies".
  • Do not attempt to stack or package these cookies until the frosting is fully set (at least 24 hours). Even then, the frosting will remain soft.
