Whether you are starting your own business and need a website or you just want a personalized e-mail address, you are going to have to get your own website. One of the obstacles is finding available domain names that aren’t just random keystrokes. Most services will tell you to put in a domain name and then kick it back as taken without actually guiding you to finding the available domain names that are actually worth purchasing.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go to the link to Yahoo Domains in the resources section of this article. Please make note that you do not have to purchase your website through Yahoo. The available domain names tool is a free service.

  2. Step 2

Enter an idea into the search box. As an example, if you are starting a website where you will sell fishing tackle, you will want to put in “fishing tackle”. For this search it kicks back with, “Sorry, fishingtackle.com is taken.” Now you can start to use the tool to find available domain names.

  3. Step 3

Click the link below the message that says, “» See similar name options.” This will produce a tool which will allow you to narrow your options and adapt idea and let you know if there are available domain names.

  4. Step 4

Check the similar options box. This box gives alternative available domain names which are similar to the one you suggested. It also will tell you if there are other extensions available. The extensions are .com, .net, .info, etc. This is also a good option to consider based on the intent of your site. For example, if you are not selling fishing tackle, rather offering a site that tells about fishing tackle, you might choose the .info option.

  5. Step 5

If you don’t like the suggestions, click, “See more” and you will get more available domain names. All of these should have some availability under one extension or another.

  6. Step 6

If there still are not available domain names in the list which you like, change your name in the top text field. For instance, if you change it to “fishing lures” you get a whole new list of available domain names to choose from.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try to choose one of the available domain names that actually says something about your site so that I can be related to the site content.
  • Whenever possible try to keep it short and simple so that people can remember it.
