If you are an animal lover or simply believe in "Live and Let Live," it's important to know which companies test their products on animals and perpetuate suffering for no reason. There are many effective and nice products that do not test on animals, but unfortunately several large companies still test on animals. Luckily, you can avoid supporting this animal cruelty with a few simple steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet
  • Good memory or a list
  1. Step 1

For a comprehensive list of which companies do and don't test on animals, visit Peta.org. There you can look up companies by name or browse the alphabetical directory of the companies that test on animals and the ones that do not. You can also sign up for a free pocket guide to put in your wallet and keep handy for shopping trips. This will help you find cruelty-free companies without memorizing a huge list of products.

  2. Step 2

Get to know the large corporations behind the labels. Procter & Gamble, for instance, still tests on animals and they make a huge amount of everyday products, from Ivory to Gillette to Pampers and Tide. Tommy Hilfiger, MAC Cosmetics and Clinique, on the other hand, do not test their products on animals.

  3. Step 3

Educate yourself. Read up about the history and current use of animal testing on Wikipedia, widely considered a neutral source. Statistics estimate that 50 to 100 million vertebrate animals worldwide - from zebrafish to non-human primates - are used every year in animal testing, many of them for household products, makeup and personal care items. Is shimmery eye shadow really worth the cost of animal lives, especially when you can get the same product from a different company without killing?

  4. Step 4

Protect your pets. Pet dogs and cats are stolen every year and sold to animal testing laboratories for a cheap price. Make sure you get your pet microchipped. Laboratories are supposed to scan animals for microchips to make sure they're not anyone's pets but many of them don't. To further make sure your pet is safe, do not let him or her wander outside unattended. (This will also prevent your pet from contracting diseases, getting hit by a car or getting into a fight.)

Tips & Warnings
  • It can be overwhelming at first to look up all of the products you use to see if they test on animals, but the Cruelty-free Shopping Guide makes it easy and quick.
