Frosty Nights Mean Hot Spiced Apple Cider
Frosty Nights Mean Hot Spiced Apple Cider

Usher in the holidays with this hot low-fat spiced apple cider beverage. Spiced cider can be non- alcoholic or add some cognac or brandy for your adult guests to bring out even more apple cider flavor. If you keep it in the crock-pot during your holiday party your house will smell like the holidays!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Crock-pot
  • 1 gallon apple cider
  • cheese cloth
  • 2 whole oranges
  • whole nutmeg
  • whole allspice
  • 12 whole cloves
  • cinnamon sticks
  • star anise
  1. Step 1

Turn the crock-pot on high and fill with apple cider. I like the unfiltered cider, don't substitute apple juice it won't taste the same.

  2. Step 2

Stick the oranges with the whole cloves and add to the crock pot. Tie up 3-4 star anise, 4 cinnamon sticks, 2 whole nutmegs and allspice in a piece of cheesecloth and add to the crock pot. When apple cider starts steaming turn down the heat to low, keep it on low for up to 12 hours.

  3. Step 3

Serve the spiced cider in warmed mugs. You can top with whipped cream, a sprinkle of cinnamon, and a grating of fresh nutmeg.

Tips & Warnings
  • The spiced cider tastes best after cooking for awhile, start the crock-pot early and fill the house with the warm spicy smells of the holidays.
  • Use whole nutmegs and a nutmeg grater to top the spiced cider with freshly grated nutmeg; the difference in flavor is remarkable.

on 1/12/2009 This sounds so good. I would have to be hosting a party or attending a church event to make it though. I'm the only one in my family that enjoys apple cider.
