Step 1
Choosing an oil - All of the oils listed are effective in treating depression. Bergamot is the most commonly used oil for depression and is general considered the most effective. Choose an oil, or oil blend, from the list and put it to use in your daily activities to uplift your mood.

Bath - 8 drops of essential oil added to the bath will invigorate and improve your mood quickly. In addition to the aroma from the essential oils, hydrotherapy, or long relaxing baths, are very good for mental well-being.

Step 3
Perfume - This is one of the most effective ways to use aromatherapy because the scent of the oils will stay with you all day long! This creates a consistent treatment for depression and ensures stability of your mood. Mix 12 drops of essential oils from above with 1/2 an ounce of water, or carrier oil. Try this sample blend of essential oils: 3 drops Bergamot, 3 drops Patchouli, 2 drops Orange, 2 drops Sandlewood, and 2 drops Clary Sage. Carrier oils include jojoba, almond, apricot, grape seed, and olive oil. Olive oil is the most economical. Jojoba oil is the most commonly used carrier oil for perfume. Water can be used if a carrier oil is not available.

Step 4
Air Freshener - In a spray bottle, mix 12 drops of essential oils from above in 1 cup of water. The sample blend from step above can be used. Shake well and spray throughout the room to freshen the air and uplift your mood.

Diffuser - Place bergamot, or one of the other essential oils listed above, in a diffuser at anytime your depression symptoms worsten.
