Good Leadership Skills

Good leadership skills are truly a challenge to get. It differs from other skills in many ways and arguably takes a specific personality to attain. The following steps for attaining good leadership skills apply to the workplace as well as any other type of leadership including being a sports team leader.

Instructions

    • 1

Get organized. A good leader has to know where they are and what they are doing as well as where the followers (employees) are and what they are doing at all times. There are tons of ideas on the internet and in books that contain ideas for these good leadership skills.

    • 2

Turn knowledge into skills. Many people have a general knowledge about how to do things, but you can't effectively guide someone to doing it themselves if you have never actually done it. For this reason it is important to utilize the knowledge you have so that when the time comes you can demonstrate that knowledge as a skill.

    • 3

Learn to be influential rather than just express your authority. "Because I said so" can work great with your kids, but not in the work place. It is better rather to encourage and give justification for what you require of your team. Good leadership skills go far beyond just what you do and require that you actually connect with the team in order to get them to desire to do the best that they can.

    • 4

Use your head. Think before you speak. Anyone in a position of leadership is automatically in a position subject to critique. If you are constantly off base because of poor comments or hasty actions, if will reflect in the way that the team as well as upper management sees you.

    • 5

Learn ethics. Specifically, business ethics can be learned by taking college courses. Ethics is important because there is a standard for ethical business practices which if not followed by all employees can have disastrous results for the individual as well as the company. A company would never place someone with weak ethics into a management position.

    • 6

Get confidence. Once you have all the other good leadership skills this one should come naturally. If it doesn't, you will need to go back and see what skills need to be developed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Good leadership skills can also be learned by picking up a mentor. Often if you make it known in your job that you are interested in leadership, a manager will pick you up as an "apprentice" of sorts and begin to teach you good leadership skills.
