Step 1
The first step is to make sure the cow's udder is washed. Fill a pail with warm water, get 2 towels - one to rinse & one to dry the udder. Having a clean udder will help keep mud or manure from falling into the bucket.
-
Step 2
Put the milk bucket under your cow's teats. If this is your first time milking, you might want to start off with trying one teat at a time. Once you're more comfortable, then you can handle two at a time.
-
Step 3
To start milking, use your thumb & pointer-finger to pinch the top of the teat that is closest to the bag. Then one at a time, close the next finger, then the next, and the next right over the teat, kind of like you're trying to squeeze water out of a garden hose.
-
Step 4
Next you want to release the pinch (and your other fingers) at the top of the teat to let the milk enter the teat. Then, repeat step 3.
-
Step 5
It does take a little time to get used to the movments of milking, but once you develop a cadence you'll move along quickly.

on 1/5/2009 If I ever need to milk a cow, I'll certainly look back to your instructions. My brother took care of our cow, so I never learned.
