Wifi is wireless internet service also known as IEEE 802.11. It is supported by the vast majority of personal computing devices, both Macintosh and PC as well as PDA's and many cell phones. If you want to know how to get Wifi, you have come to the right place.

1. Get local high speed internet service. Typically this will mean cable internet or DSL, but in some cases will mean satellite internet service. You can operate a wireless router from a dial-up connection, but it would require having a server connected to the internet at all times for it to work and it would be just as slow as dial up.

2. Decide how far you need to go with your Wifi ready device. This will determine what type of wifi router you end up purchasing as most common Wifi routers intended for home use will only reach 120 feet.

3. Decide speed. Wifi can be various speeds. If you are content with the slower speeds of the lower model wifi routers, then go that route, however you may want to look into a higher end router in order to get full use of your high speed internet.

   Get a Wifi Router. Wifi routers come in all different shapes, sizes and colors. Basically, the router works like a simple network router, but it also broadcasts a wireless signal which can be picked up by your wireless devices.

   Hook it up. The Wifi router plugs into your cable or DSL modem using an Ethernet cable and that's it. Follow manufacturer specifications for software and security setup.

6. Use it! Most laptops, PDA' and cell phones are wifi ready. That means that they will automatically connect when they see a signal.
