Things You'll Need:
- Thank you cards
- Envelopes
- Pen
- Stamps
-
Step 1
Pick out a card that serves the purpose for the thank you. There are endless possibilities where this is concerned; I suggest the cards that are blank on the inside. This will allow you to personalize the card without competing with preprinted words.
-
Step 2
Be sure to write the note in a timely manner. Typically, when thanking someone for a birthday gift or support during a difficult time, it is customary to thank the person within 2-3 weeks of the event or receipt of the item. Wedding etiquette is slightly different. When thanking someone for a wedding gift, the cards should be sent out 1-2 months after the wedding. This will give you time for a honeymoon and settling into your new home/gifts.
-
Step 3
Handwrite the envelope as well as the card. Regardless of how beautiful (or not so elegant) your handwriting, the card will be much more personal when written by you, not just printed out.
-
Step 4
Never begin your card with a "Thank you for". This will seem rushed and impersonal. Instead, start out with "It was so wonderful of you to……" or "Dear Aunt Mae….."
-
Step 5
If possible, include a sentence about how you are using the gift, or where it is displayed in your home.
-
Step 6
Finish off with a nice stamp, though everyday stamps are fine a specialty one can add a polished, sincere touch.
For example: If it is a thank you card for a wedding gift, pick a stamp with hearts or doves.
