Everyone loves the classic sugar cookie, especially for holidays! I've tried many sugar cookie recipes, and this is hands-down the best. These cookies are perfect for cutting out shapes, have a wonderful taste, and they stay soft for days and days! People will be asking for seconds- and the recipe.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1/4 teaspoon cream of tarter
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
  • a few dashes of cinnamon
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 sour cream
  1. Step 1

Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, nutmeg, and cream of tarter. Set aside.

  2. Step 2

In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg, vanilla, and sour cream until well blended. Stir in the sifted ingredients from step one. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill overnight.

  3. Step 3

Preheat oven to 275. On a lightly floured surface, roll to 1/4" thick. Cut into shapes with cookie cutters. Place 1.5" apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.

  4. Step 4

Bake 8-10 minutes. Allow to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.

  5. Step 5

Ice with The Best Sugar Cookie Icing! (Link found below). It tastes perfect with these cookies, and makes amazing, gourmet looking cookies.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can increase the nutmeg to 1/4 teaspoon if you prefer the taste
  • Be sure the cookies are completely cooled before icing.
