Step 1
Portability.
You must decide if you want to have a desktop or laptop. They are both great types of computers, but depending on what your needs are one may be better than the other. If you are a big traveler, I suggest getting a laptop. Laptops are great because you can buy very small ones and bring them practically anywhere. Trying to bring a desktop as a carryon on a plane is a totally different story. -
Step 2
Price.
Before you buy anything you need to know what your budget is on your computer. Go ahead and set aside the amount you would like to spend before you get to the store or order it online. Chances are if you can't find exactly what you are wanting for your price if you wait it something may get put on sale. -
Step 3
What do you need?
You must ask yourself what features will you need. For example, if you get an awesome graphics card and extremely fast processor but are only using your desktop or laptop computers to search the internet you will be paying much more for things you do not need. So know what you will be doing on the computer and buy accordingly. -
Step 4
Printers.
Also you may want to look for printers when shopping for a laptop or desktop. Many stores offer a deal on printers when you purchase a laptop or desktop. So pick up sale papers or ask people in the store if they are having any deals on their printers.
