Get the Earned Income Tax Credit

According to the IRS, childless workers with a low-income are believed to be the largest number of taxpayers who do not claim the earned income tax credit. Many qualify but don't know they are allowed to claim it. The best way to know for sure if you qualify is by answering a few questions. Read on to find out how to determine if you should file for earned income tax credit.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Internet connection
  1. Step 1

Meet the age criteria. You must be 25 to 64 years old to qualify for the earned income tax credit.

  2. Step 2

Meet the 2008 low income criteria for both earned and adjusted gross income. You can check the low income requirements on the IRS website (see link in resource section), but summarily, a single person cannot exceed $12,880 and married couples filing jointly must have less than $15,880. Married couples filing separately are not eligible.

  3. Step 3

Answer questions by clicking on the “EITC Assistant” on the IRS website to find out if you are eligible for the earned income tax credit. Before starting the process, you will need your W-2 forms or earning statement and approximately 15-20 minutes to complete the assistant.

  4. Step 4

Answer all of the questions asked by the virtual assistance honestly to determine if you are eligible for the earned income tax credit even if you are childless.

Tips & Warnings
  • You might also qualify for past years income tax credit. If you do, you might still be able to claim it.Ask your tax adviser.

on 11/2/2009 I wasn't aware that EIC was available to those without children. But the income requirements insure that hardly anyone will qualify for it. Very interesting.
