Fantasy football has revolutionized Sunday afternoons. As a die hard Buccaneers fan, my championship dreams would be sometimes be crushed by mid-October. With the advent of fantasy football, I can now continue to play late into the NFL season.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • newspaper (or internet access)
  1. Step 1

Gather a bunch of friends - To start a fantasy football league, all you really need is a bunch of friends who share your passion for NFL football. Most leagues can be successful with 8 to 12 teams. Personally, I have found that 10 teams work best, but that is simply a matter of choice. Make sure that you have an even number of owners. If not, one team will not have anyone to play each week.

  2. Step 2

Select a Draft Date - Now that you have selected the friends that you want to play in your fantasy football league, you must now determine what day you want to hold you draft. Our league is usually held as close to opening day as possible. Holding your fantasy football drafts as late as possible ensures that you do not draft injured players (since some players get hurt during the preseason).

  3. Step 3

Decide on your fantasy football league rules - Every league has its own personality. My league actually began over 15 years ago and our rules have constantly evolved to reflect our distinct personalities. Some leagues count only touchdowns, while other count yardage and touchdowns. Some league include defensive players, while others draft only NFL teams. Put your rules in writing before the season begins. This will decrease the number of arguments that occur.

  4. Step 4

Hold your draft - Draft day should be a national holiday. It is something that my friends and I look forward to every year. Typically, we buy snacks and drinks and meet at someone's house. Set aside 3 to 4 hours to ensure that you have plenty of time to hold your fantasy football draft. There are many different strategies when drafting your team. Visit some of my other articles and find out how to dominate your fantasy football league.

  5. Step 5

Use Fantasy Football Software (optional) - When we began our fantasy football league, we wanted a 100% free fantasy football league. We now use a fantasy football software program that tracks our rules and scoring for us. You do not need a program. You can record all of your stats by hand, but this will take a few hours each week to perform.

  6. Step 6

Decide on Championship Prizes - Many fantasy football leagues are played purely for fun. Others offer cash prizes. Our league offers cash prizes as well as a fantasy football trophy. Personally, winning the trophy and having my name engraved upon it is much more rewarding that any monetary compensation.

Tips & Warnings
  • Have fun
  • Watch the games with your friends. It will make it that much better
  • Put your rules in writing before the season begins. Include a tie-breaker rule (this happens more than you would imagine)
