Pianos are fun to play, but so expensive! And renting one feels like putting money down the toilet. So here are a few ways to get a used piano cheap, to enjoy for yourself or perhaps for your child starting lessons.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Internet
  • Printer
  1. Step 1

First if you're already taking lessons, make sure your instructor knows you're in the market for a used piano. He or she might know someone who's got one to get rid of.

  2. Step 2

Look on craigslist and kijiji. You can often find piano's there cheap if you have the muscle to go get them.

  3. Step 3

Print up a notice and place it on any community boards. You'll often find these places like your child's school and local businesses. Use a very large font as a header, you need to catch people's attention who might not be reading the other adds. The in smaller print briefly state why you are looking for one. Make sure to include a number of small tabs at the bottom of the sheet with your phone number and e-mail address that people can tear off to take home, after all, you want to make it as easy as possible for them!

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember to keep in mind that you'll want to tune the piano after you get it. Even a perfectly tuned piano should be tuned after being moved, so that goes double for one that's been sitting around for a while.
  • Have someone who's familiar with older piano's take a look at your purchase before you agree on a price. Even cheap used pianos are an investment, so make sure you're making a good one.
