How to Plan A Fun Sixties Theme Party
The 1960s was an era of young people breaking away from the conservative 1950s, so a '60s-theme party is all about fun. Radio had chart-topping hits from Ike and Tina Turner, Van Morrison and Aretha Franklin. Fashions ranged from bouffant hairstyles in the early part of the decade to go-go boots and mini skirts in the mid-sixties, while musicals like "Hair" were popular entertainment at the end of the decade. Create the energy and mood of the '60s at your party by incorporating sixties touches in the invitations to the entertainment. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Set a date for the party. Write up a guest list. Determine the location, amount of food needed, the number of invitations and entertainment. Send invitations three weeks in advance.
Purchase invitations or send virtual invitations with a '60s theme, such as those with a colorful, graphic print. Indicate on the invitation where and when the party will be held and RSVP information. If you'd like guests to dress up for the '60s theme, make it clear on the invitation. Make the invitations fit the theme by using words like "groovy."

2
Create the menu for the party. Because the '60s was a starting point for interest in healthier foods, consider serving healthy dishes such as granola, vegetarian lasagna and chips with guacamole. Include cocktails if the party is for adults, and serve Coca-Cola and punch for non-alcoholic options and if the party includes children.

3
Purchase the party accessories and decorations. Choose '60s-theme decorations including plates, napkins and banners with smiley faces or peace sign motifs. Ensure that you have enough plates, cups, utensils, napkins and serving items.

4
Arrange for entertainment. Set the sixties mood with music and provide space to dance. Create a '60s playlist or purchase a '60s music CD to play during the party. If you are creating your own playlist, look for selections from Sonny and Cher, the Isley Brothers, The Beatles, Otis Redding and The Beach Boys.

5
Create a costume. Shop for vintage items at second-hand stores for inexpensive costumes. These include bell-bottom pants and plaid shirts for men, miniskirts, tie dyes or hot pants for women and love beads.
