How to Create Decorative Batik Table Linens

Imagine having beautiful, unique table linens your guest will ooh and aah over at every holiday or party gathering!

This is a very easy, inexpensive way to create batik tablecloths, napkins, or place mats. Even a simple design can make striking table linens all your own!

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

• old, broken crayons
• muffin tin you don't mind disposing of
• solid colored table linens
• paint brush
• commercial dye, such as Rit

1. Sort the crayons into muffin cups for as many colors as you want to use. Put the tin in a pan of water and melt on low heat on the stove or in the microwave.

2. If you like, you can draw designs on the table linens, and then paint them, or you can just paint the designs freehand, using the melted crayons for paint.

3. Wrinkle the linens to crush the design until the wax cracks.

4. Carefully dip the cloth into the hot commercial dye of your choice. Follow the instructions on the dye. When the dye is dry, you will have a lovely batik design.

Tips & Warnings

• You can use this same technique to make aprons, Christmas ornaments, tree skirts, and other fabric designs.
• Be careful when heating crayons! They are flammable.
• Use a long-handled ladle or other implement when dipping cloth in hot dye.
