Step 1
Make a survival pack for every member of your party. This will make it more portable and allow each member of your party to share in the burden of carrying the items without making it too hard for one person to haul it all around.
-
Step 2
Include items from all the main categories of Need: Shelter, Health, Food, Money, Maintenance, and Rescue. I won't go into detail for each category since you can probably figure out what you "need" and not "want" to survive. I will list a few items from each category you may overlook.
-
Step 3
SHELTER: Tarp, rope, small tents (really portable ones).
HEALTH: Aspirin, peroxide, gauze, bottle of multi-vitamins.
FOOD: Non-perishable foods (tuna), water purifier, space food packs.
MAINTENANCE: Folding saw, foil, knives, compass.
RESCUE: Flare gun, mirror (signaling), matches, pan, ponchos. -
Step 4
Obviously there are many more items to add, these are not light or easy bags to pack, a lot of thought goes into them. Once you make them, they are invaluable to have as they will likely save your life and the lives of those in your party. Make sure to search the internet for "survival gear" and "survival food". You will find great websites for space food, crank items that do not require batteries, reflective and solar gear, and really handy items. Once of the best things I have see is the water purifier. It's a couple of hundred dollars but allows you to drink clean water from even the most disgusting stream. Without clean water, you're dead...so it's worth it. Good luck!

on 12/28/2008 When we lived in L. A. and there were so many earthquakes... we always had a survival kit ready. I have lived in Grass Valley now for 17 years and I recently came across my survival kit, packed away in a closet....wonder if the water is still good? LOL
