If you have a strong password, at some point you will need to do a password reset. A good password is one that uses both letters, numbers & symbols. It is also a combination that most people wouldn't guess. This makes it difficult for even you to remember.

Here is how to reset any password, whether it's at your bank, cell phone service, or email account.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Set up your password correctly. If you have several online accounts, you can get frustrated with the whole process. It may seem funny to give a nonsensical answer to your security question.

Companies use security questions to help you retrieve your password. They might ask you something common like what is your mother's maiden name? They often let you choose which security question you want to have related to your account. Choose one with a clear answer that you will be able to remember.

  2. Step 2

Stay calm. Most everyone you deal with recognizes that people forget things, especially passwords. You probably have at least a dozen of these things floating around in your head. Recognize that if the account is really yours, the company will help you access it.

  3. Step 3

Most sites have a request password or forgotten password link. They will send an email to the address on the record. This will usually have a link to reset your password or a temporary password for you to use.

Depending on the security of the site, your account may be locked if you try to enter an incorrect password too many times. Instead, if you can't remember your password, don't be afraid to click on the forgotten password link.

  4. Step 4

If you ever receive an email asking you to reset your password when you haven't requested it, tread carefully. This might be a phishing scam posing as your e-mail company or bank account. Most online companies have a policy that they will never ask for your password through email. Don't click on the link in the email.

Instead, open up a new browser & log into the site the way you usually would. Most likely, you won't see any notices asking you to change your password.

  5. Step 5

If you need to call the company to help you access the site have all relevant information on hand. Be sure to have your account number, email address, & your social security number if you used it to set up your account. Answering all those questions over the phone may seem tedious, but it's to help protect you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Avoid using the same password over & over. If someone got a hold of one your passwords they would be able to access multiple accounts.
